Vic Davalillo, a two-time World Series champion who spent 16 seasons in the major leagues and won a Gold Glove as an outfielder, died on Wednesday in Caracas, Venezuela. He was 84 or 87; sources differ on his age.His daughter Helga Davalillo said he died after emergency surgery for an intestinal obstruction and renal insufficiency.Baseball Reference lists Davalillo’s date of birth as July 30, 1939, but Davalillo considered July 31 his birthday, and his biographer, Asdrúbal Fuenmayor, wrote that Davalillo was born in 1936. The 1969 Sporting News Baseball Register also said he was born in 1936.Davalillo signed with the Cincinnati Reds organization in 1958 at age 18, starting as a left-handed pitcher in minor league ball. But he was eventually prized more for his bat and increasingly used in ...

Penn’s Chaos: What Led Up to Liz Magill’s Resignation After Antisemitism Hearings

The dissident trustees of the University of Pennsylvania’s board of trustees had decided to meet in secret over the weekend. They had spent months watching support for Penn’s president erode as pro-Palestinian students demonstrated on campus, donors threatened to withhold tens of millions of dollars, and the advisory board of Penn’s influential business school demanded that the university change its leadership.Through it all, the president, M. Elizabeth Magill, had kept the support of Scott L. Bok, the chairman of Penn’s board. But by Saturday, four days after her disastrous appearance on Capitol Hill, about two dozen trustees, more than half of the 48 voting members, came to a consensus: Ms. Magill had to go.They did not know that Ms. Magill had reached the same conclusion. She had been wo...

Shohei Ohtani, most coveted free agent in baseball history, to sign $700 million contract with Dodgers

Shohei Ohtani’s singular pursuit of history, one man’s quest to rewrite the baseball world’s understanding of what is possible, reached another summit on Saturday when he agreed to the largest contract in the annals of major North American team sports, a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, his agency CAA announced.Ohtani announced his decision on Instagram. The deal ends years of feverish speculation about Ohtani’s future. Ohtani, a 29-year-old two-way sensation, has captivated the industry since he left Japan for Major League Baseball heading into the 2018 season. He has done things that appeared impossible in the modern era, feats that harkened back to Babe Ruth. As he traveled the country with the Los Angeles Angels this past summer, fans serenaded him with recr...

Premier League TV Rights Deal Steps Back From Streaming

The technical term might be “vertical integration.” Or, on reflection, perhaps that is not quite right, and it would — in the jargon — be known as “synergy.” Maybe those are the same thing. Either way, the concept is best encapsulated by Jack Donaghy, the vulpine executive portrayed by Alec Baldwin in the presumably now problematic sitcom “30 Rock.”In one of the show’s later seasons, Donaghy has an epiphany. Kabletown, the insufficiently rapacious corporation he serves, already controls a television network, NBC, and the cable infrastructure that delivers it to people’s homes. The logical next step, he decides, is to take control of the full gamut of the viewing experience. It is time to start making couches. For some time, there has been an assumption that — at one point or another — the P...

‘What the Heck?’ CNN’s Debate Plans Leave New Hampshire Officials Confused.

With great fanfare this week, CNN announced it would host the network’s first debate of the 2024 presidential campaign, gathering the Republican candidates for a marquee event on Jan. 21 at Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire. There was only one problem: Saint Anselm had no idea what CNN was talking about.“We were surprised to be included on a press release by a network about a debate which we had not planned or booked,” Neil Levesque, executive director of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm, said in a statement on Friday. The chairman of New Hampshire’s Republican Party, Chris Ager, went a little further.“The CNN thing came out and everybody’s like, ‘What the heck?’” Mr. Ager said in an interview. “I’m still scratching my head. And I still haven’t been contacted by CN...

What the golf ball rollback means for professional, recreational golfers

NASSAU, Bahamas — At least one person says it’s monstrous. Others say they don’t understand the anger. But everyone has opinions. The decision by the USGA and R&A to “roll back” golf balls universally across all levels of golf is now one of the most debated topics in the game. After three years of a “notice and comments” period in which the governing bodies proposed a bifurcated system with only the pros using a different ball, such strong opposition to bifurcation led to a universal decision. In less than a decade, the golf balls you and the pros are using will no longer be within the rules. But there’s a whole lot more to parse through with this massive move. What does a ball rollback mean?Golf balls will be scaled back to ensure they can not go as far, combatting a long-term issue of p...

U.S. Military Grounds Ospreys After Crash Off Japan Leaves No Survivors

The U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps said on Wednesday that they were grounding their fleets of Ospreys after a preliminary investigation found that a problem with the aircraft may have caused a crash last week off Japan that is believed to have killed all eight airmen aboard. In a statement, the Air Force cited “a potential materiel failure” in the crash, though it said the “underlying cause of the failure” remained unclear. The service said it had grounded its Ospreys to “provide time and space for a thorough investigation.” The U.S. Naval Air Systems Command, which is responsible for the Marine Corps’ and Navy’s versions of the Osprey, said it had followed suit “out of an abundance of caution.”The grounding affects nearly 500 military aircraft: The Air Force has 54 Ospreys, the Navy...

What we learned in NFL Week 13: The 49ers’ NFC playoff potential, Tyreek’s target in sight and more

It was obvious how badly the San Francisco 49ers wanted this one, how much the scars from that afternoon last January remained seared in their minds, an opportunity at a Super Bowl berth effectively lost the moment their starting quarterback went down 22 snaps into the game.49ers star receiver Deebo Samuel didn’t hide from it during the offseason, admitting what a handful of his teammates were surely thinking: With no healthy quarterbacks, the 49ers were effectively playing a man down in last year’s NFC Championship Game against the Eagles in Philadelphia. In other words: they never got a fair shake. That made the 31-7 loss harder to swallow.Eleven months later the 49ers returned to Lincoln Financial Field and pummeled the defending conference champs 42-19, further muddying the NFC playoff ...
